Happy Reformation Day!

October 31st is truly an extraordinary day in Christian history.

If you’d like some REAL cause for celebration, check this out:

Martin Luther's attack on the all-powerful Catholic Church was a knife to the heart of an empire that had endured for more than a thousand years. Nailing his treatise to the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral, this previously obscure German monk changed the world forever, unleashing forces that plunged Europe into war and chaos. But Luther would do more than revolutionize the church; he offered the Christian world a new vision of man's relationship with authority in general. Filmed across Europe -- from rustic rural Germany to the opulence of Vatican City -- "Martin Luther" is the dramatic story of the collapse of the medieval world and the birth of the modern age.

Hope in things to come...

Several years ago, the topic in a chat room one day, was "what it might be like in Heaven". How are physical senses might be restored to their original state. Of course alot of it speculation, but it's fun sometimes to do that.

One of my friends was somewhat down, as the anniversary date of her father's death was quickly approaching. She missed her dad, and although believes him to be in our Master's presence now, still greived for him, as we all miss those we love. I thought I'd lost this - but found it this morning, and just felt like sharing it here with you all. I wrote this that day, as a result of the chat conversation, and the conversation with her, about her dad:

Hope in Things To Come

And then the change came
Newness of life
in a way never known
All of my senses
were then blended as one

A glorious hymn
So tender and sweet
Harmonies of angels
Was I tasting this treat?

My mind was astounded
Everything so new
Colors and feelings,
sounds and smells
This holy place I now stood
Were those trumpets and bells?

Was I tasting the blue?
Was I smelling the sky?
Did I see the notes in the chorus,
As they danced before my eyes?

Did the sounds taste like honey?
Did I hear the shades of the rainbow?
Was I feeling this grace,
That draped my snow white robe?

And then I beheld Him.
That wonderful, glorious face.
Light was throughout Him,
This light I could now taste.

I stood in awe,
And remembered the verse
’Eye hath not seen
Nor has ear heard’
In perfect holy reverence,
I uttered no word

My soul overflowing with joy,
My senses restored.
I bowed to worship Him,
On a pure golden floor.

Everything was new,
All old things passed away.
Perfection was this place,
Where all was restored,
All was made whole.

My time on earth was over.
This new life begun,
Eternity with my Savior.
The only Begotten Son.

What wonders await us,
I never could have known
My senses on earth so confined.
Experience in the flesh,

Just a shadow of what was to come.

Sola Scriptura in Evangelism

Recently my dear friend Pat started his own blog http://thenarrowway4evr.blogspot.com

He shared how he came to understand the doctrines of sovereign grace, and it made me think of this:

Sola Scriptura in Evangelism
By Carla Rolfe

For every Christian, sharing the gospel of Jesus, is what we long to do. We desire to see our loved ones saved, and we desire to see complete strangers as well, come to know the love of Christ. We walk in a forgiven status, and this very fact, humbles our hearts, and compels us to share the truth of His grace with everyone else.
In our efforts to share this beautiful news, every one of us comes across people who will flat out, not receive it. Some seem to listen, but it's clear that the words we shared with them had no affect on their heart. Some, we've shared Jesus with so many times, it might feel like yet another conversation about the grace of God, might be a waste of time. It can be very frustrating to pour your heart out to someone; longing with such great desire that God will open their eyes to the truth, and then seeing them go right back to a life of sin. A big part of the reason it can be so frustrating, is because of this desire we have, that others experience the same grace the same newness of life we now have.
Many years ago, when I began to plan my very first garden, I decided it would be wise to start compost as well, for the benefits of the soil it produces. Each day after dinner, and throughout the day, our family would scrape all of our 'food garbage' into the compost bucket, and it would be dumped on the pile. As the weeks went by, I watered, and weeded, and tended to my first garden, and the compost pile grew higher and higher, as each bucket full of food scraps were dumped in there every day.
I began to notice soon after, weeds and grasses were growing out of the compost pile, but just ignored them, and figured I'd let 'nature' take it's course there. What I first thought were weeds and grasses, turned out to be potatoes, tomatoes, melons, pumpkins, onions, corn, and sunflowers, all growing together, out of the same compost pile! I never watered or weeded that pile, like I did my carefully tended-to garden, but the fruits and vegetables that came out of the compost, were bigger and tastier than the ones I'd been toiling over!
A very similar process takes place as we share the good news of Christ, with the lost. We put 'seeds' in places, and never know if they'll take root - sometimes they might take root, and bloom in ways we never imagined, and we may never even know it! Where the seeds in my compost did what they did according to their nature, God takes the seeds of the gospel we give out, and does with them according to His will - regardless of what we might be planning. In all our efforts to see the converted souls of the lost, it is truly God’s word alone that can bind the conscience of man. Where the seeds in my compost pile never received a drop of water from me, they did soak up the raindrops that they needed to grow. God's word works in the same way! We might share the gospel with someone, and then someone else comes along and 'waters' that seed. (1 Corinthians 3:6) Countless times over the years I have heard this very same testimony from new believers. Someone might say he first heard the gospel from his grandmother, as a young boy. Then later in life he met a Christian at school that spoke the same truth he heard as a child. Yet still later, he heard it again, maybe from a man at work, or a street evangelist handing out tracts, confirming again and again, the same foundational truth of the Scriptures. The Bible tells us we are laborers together, with God. (1Cor.3:9) Testimonies of converted men and women bear this out, daily.
Take heart, Jesus says that of all that the Father has given to Him, He shall lose nothing. (John 6:39) He says that every man that has learned who He is, by God's power, will come to Him. (John 6:45) God's words as spoken by the prophet Isaiah, tell us that His word will not return to Him void, but that it will accomplish what He pleases, and that it will prosper (succeed) where He sends it. (Isaiah 55:11)
We do not know who will hear the Word we share, but we do know that many will hear. The word of God is the final authority, it is complete, it is perfection, it is life giving, it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes and it is sufficient. Many people might adopt all sorts of methods of evangelism, to reach the lost, but ultimately it all comes down to the power of the gospel, the very written word of God.
The next time we come into a situation where it seems the person we're sharing the gospel with, isn't hearing us, remember these very words from our precious Lord:
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. (John 10:27-30)
Be encouraged and remember, His will be done. It is a reality that many we have shared the gospel with in our lifetimes, we will never see again, on this earth. We will never know if the testimony of Christ we gave them had any impact on their life at all. However, one thing we can know for sure is the surety of the power of that word, to change lives, impact families, and convert souls for His glory.
Scripture tells us the word of God that regenerates souls, lives, and abides, forever! (1Peter 1:23). Indeed Sola Scriptura, Scripture alone, is all sufficient in our evangelism. Take heart, and continue to share the gospel of grace in every opportunity He affords you.

Elephant Skin

Ever have one of those days where it seems like everyone you talk to, or every time you turn around, something else is said that hurts, or tears down, or was intended to malign or slander?

I had one of those days yesterday. It started out good, but eventually ended up one of those days.

A good friend of mine told me yesterday how developing elephant skin is a good thing. I had to laugh... even though I wasn't in a laughing mood. She simply reminded me to check my own actions, and if they be found guiltless - to let the accusation or slander bounce off, and leave it there...

That sure sounds easy. I think I'll look in the yellow pages today and see if there's an Elephant Skin store nearby.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend!

For all you Canandians out there - happy Thanksgiving!

We really do have so much to be thankful for. It doesn't take much to look around at what you're blessed with, to see it.

in Him,

Gleanings of Grace

I almost forgot...

Here's a really great blog:

Gleanings of Grace: a compilation of sovereign grace articles.

From this blog's intro:

I collected bit by bit numerous articles by various authors and compiled them together (in no particular order). My desire is that He may be glorified. My thought was to make more Christ centered articles easily accessible to friends and others. My prayer is to set before brethren reflections that exhort, comfort, challenge, or even rebuke; and that His sheep not yet in His fold may hear His call.

Is it actually fall?

I'm just wondering... where did summer go? For alot of folks this year, summer was more like fall, and now that it's fall, I'm left wondering, did we actually get a summer this year at all? :-)

It's been a very busy time the last few weeks. School started - and is going very well so far, we took a trip to Kentucky to visit a dear friend, and then last weekend another dear friend BK, from Wisconsin, came to visit us.

It's been a very busy time spiritually as well. Over the last several months our family has been dealing with some temporal issues that have been very difficult. We've tried hard to simply trust in the Lord to meet all our needs, and He has (as He always is) been most faithful, even when we are oftentimes so very NOT faithful, by grumbling and worrying and complaining. A dear friend of mine just this morning said to me "God is GOOD, Carla". I wonder if we sometimes lose site of that very simple, very true statement.

We did receive some good news this morning that at least some of the source of the difficulties would be removed, so this is great GREAT news for us. There are still other things left for us to deal with, but the most stressful issue has now been removed, and I'm just left this morning feeling so very grateful, thankful, and so completely unworthy of such a great blessing.

How many times must He show His hand of providence in our lives before we trust 100% that He will provide all our needs? I'm not sure, I'm still working on that. I'm just real glad He reminded me again this morning.

And now.... it's time for school.
Have an absolutely FANTASTIC day...

SOLI DEO GLORIA!
